Summary of position:
Reporting to the Senior Trade Commissioner, with responsibility for several priority and reactive trade sectors (including but not limited to Life Sciences/Healthcare, Infrastructure, ICT, Tourism, Investment) contributes to the delivery of Canada’s International Business Development program at the Embassy of Canada to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman, and Yemen. The officer:

• Provides ongoing market intelligence and business leads to Canadian clients in selected priority sectors to promote and increase trade and investment with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman, and Yemen;
• Conducts research and analysis and formulates strategic advice for senior management and clients to enhance Canadian competitiveness in the local market and to provide quality and efficient service to clients;
• Develops and maintains a network of key local business and government contacts;
• Initiates, organizes and manages promotional events and activities in support of Canadian clients.


Essential qualifications:
Education:
Successful completion of a university degree from a recognized university in a relevant field, for example, Business Administration, Economics, International Business, Marketing, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Life Sciences.
Language:
• Fluency in English (oral and written)
• Ability to speak beginner level Arabic

Experience:
• Minimum of 5 years of recent* experience in a manager level position in International Business Development in any one of the following sectors: Infrastructure, Education, Life Sciences/Healthcare, Extractive Industries, Food and Agriculture, Finance and Investment etc., while working in a corporate environment located in the MENA region;
• Minimum of 5 years of recent* experience in establishing business network relationships, drafting business development initiatives, and writing business development reports, while working in a corporate environment located in the MENA region.
*Recent is defined as within the last 8 years.

Knowledge:
• Of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman business, markets, trade trends and opportunities and local business practices, particularly with regard to the Infrastructure, Education, Life Sciences/Healthcare, Extractive Industries sectors;
• Of the structure and operation of the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman, including the functions and responsibilities of key government departments and agencies, the relationship between departments and policies on trade issues and investment issues;
• Of International Business Development practices including excellence in client service delivery, market research and competitive intelligence gathering
Abilities/Competencies:
• Proficient in the use of office technology, including Microsoft Office applications, trade and marketing e-tools;
• Organize, plan and execute events, handle logistical arrangements, hospitality and obtain sourcing quotes;
• Business networking;
• Strong communication skills including use of media and social media;
• Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures;
• Resourceful and possesses excellent judgement;
• Client focused, able to work with high profile clients and contacts

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications:
• Established networks/relationships in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Sultanate of Oman;
• Previous experience working for a developed country Embassy as business development officer, in either the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, or Sultanate of Oman;
• Knowledge of Canadian business capabilities and sectoral strengths
• Master’s qualification in a relevant field
If candidates meet the factors listed in the asset qualifications they must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their covering letter.

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Capacity to travel at short notice throughout the GCC region, Canada, and internationally including for events and training courses and to meet clients and stakeholders;
• Willingness to assist with other Embassy initiatives as and when needed for example for official visits;
• Willingness to work additional hours as required, including evenings and weekends;

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Valid passport and Saudi residency permit (Iqama)
• Must be a legal resident of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and eligible to work therein
• Iqama transfer
• Successful completion of a 1 year probation period;
• Able to obtain and retain an enhanced reliability security clearance;
