Summary of position:
Organisational context
The province of Ontario generates 40% of Canada’s GDP, with North America’s 2nd largest financial services sector and 2nd largest technology sector. The Ontario Government has a network of offices, Ontario International: Trade and Investment Offices (TIOs), co-located in Canadian Missions around the world. The TIOs are composed of a Canadian Diplomat (Head of the TIO) and locally engaged team members, mandated to build international commercial relations for Ontario. The TIOs are measured by quantitative results in: 1) Export/Trade Promotion; 2) Foreign Direct Investment Attraction; 3) Partnership Development.

Position summary
This is a rare opportunity to represent Canada’s commercial interests in the UK in a senior-level, entrepreneurial-like role. It is suited for an innovative, committed and passionate professional, looking to thrive and build their career in a unique and dynamic environment.

The Senior Commercial Officer – Ontario is a locally engaged employee of the Government of Canada, reporting to the Head of the TIO. The successful candidate will take a prominent role in planning, developing and delivering initiatives to fulfill the commercial objectives of the Government of Ontario in the UK.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened on the essential qualifications below and must demonstrate in their cover letter how they meet these criteria. Only those candidates who meet all the Essential Requirements and demonstrate this clearly within their application will then proceed to the next stage of the process.

Education:
• A University degree from an accredited recognized university

Experience:
• Minimum of 7 years’ recent experience within the last 10 years working with minimal supervision in Export/Trade Promotion, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Attraction, and/or International Economic Development. Applicants must clearly demonstrate at least one export/trade or FDI outcome (no identifying names required).

• Experience in at least one of the following UK industry sectors: advanced manufacturing, financial services, information and communications technology, automotive, aerospace, food and beverage manufacturing, life sciences, and environmental/clean technologies.

Linguistic Profile: Professional written and oral communication in English

Rated Requirements
Candidates must also meet the Rated Requirements shown below, which will be assessed through any of the following: cover letter, written test, oral communication, interview and reference checks.

• Ability to collect, synthesis and distribute information or intelligence to senior-level internal and external clients.
• Ability to plan, manage and host high level visits (Minister, Premier or equivalent) and incoming/outgoing business delegations.
• Understanding of key sectors of the Ontario Economy
• Build and maintain a network of commercially focused stakeholders and clients in one of the key UK industry sectors in the essential qualifications.
• Ability to prioritize multiple demands, exercise initiative and judgement, and remain organised.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. Candidates must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their cover letter.

• Lead/participate in working groups
• Use of social media tools for commercial promotion and to generate new business opportunities
• Budget management

Overtime and weekend work may be required on occasion
Ability to travel when required

Condition(s) of Employment:
Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday at time to be arranged by the supervisor. Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory employment and character references and the ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security screening (including a criminal record check).
Copies of educational qualifications will be required at the interview stage of the process. Successful candidate must have a valid passport and the required documentation allowing the right to work in the UK. Documentation will be required.

This position is open to candidates currently resident in the UK, who hold current documentation allowing them to work in the UK without restriction, who meet all of the essential requirements stated and whose applications are received by the closing date.
