Summary of position:
The Senior Commercial Officer – Ontario is a local employee of the Government of Canada who works autonomously and reports to the Head of Program at the Ontario Trade & Investment Office (TIO) located in Shanghai. The position is required to contribute to the planning, development and delivery of the Province of Ontario’s investment attraction, trade program development, and research and innovation partnerships within the TIO area of operation and sector responsibility.

Essential qualifications:
Education:
• Minimum Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience

Language:
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing, speaking)

Experience:
• Minimum five years’ recent experience in international commerce, trade promotion and investment attraction
• Experience in working and liaising with government departments and officials
• Experience in working with visiting business and/or government delegations

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of international business (exporting, importing, investment, technology transfer and commercialization)
• Working knowledge of key industry sectors in Ontario
• Working knowledge of industry sectors, provincial and municipal government and key business and professional associations in east and south China regions

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to identify the business leads, such as investment or trade and ability to track and ability to close the deal
• Ability to utilize the most up-to-date communication technology to enhance her/his presentation
• Ability to write effective business correspondence and business or event reports in English and Chinese
• Ability to research, interpret sources of information and synthesize data to respond to requests for information from clients
• Ability to provide concise summary of different source of information to her/his supervisor and to present key messages of Ontario to the Chinese audience
• Ability to perform translation and interpretation from Chinese to English and vice versa

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance
