Summary of position:
Under the supervision of the Deputy Management and Consular Officer (DMCO), operates the central telephone switchboard serving all programs of the Consulate; provides general information and front-line assistance to non-consular visitors of the Consulate; assists in the delivery of the Consular Program, including responding to consular enquiries, pre-screening passport applications, and receiving and distributing passports and citizenship certificates; receives, directs, and sends out mail for the Consulate; and performs other administrative duties as required.

Essential qualifications:
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience.

Language:
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Experience in dealing with the public and customer/client service
• Experience in performing general administrative duties

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to write effective business correspondence in English using Microsoft Outlook and Word software

Asset Qualifications:
Language:
• Proficiency in French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Previous experience as a receptionist or administrative assistant in an office environment.

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required;
• Able to travel domestically and internationally as required

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance.

Area of selection:
This position is open to external applicants residing in China and employees occupying an indeterminate or term position in China Missions who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date.
