Summary of position:
Under the supervision of the Head of Innovation, the Trade Commissioner Assistant:
• Delivers research and prepares responses to enquiries on a broad range of trade, innovation and investment related subjects as well as general enquiries at large;
• Provides social media support (researches content and managing online presence) for International Business Development section and consulate wide social media presence.
• Provides organizational and event planning support for projects, activities and VIP visitor programs for the International Business Development section;
• Provides research, administrative and clerical support to Trade Commissioners for the effective implementation of the program;
• Collects, maintains and collates a variety of documentation and records and utilizes appropriate tools for the tracking and management of budget resources;
• Inputs data into the Client Management System (TRIO);
• Leads the information management for the team;
• Assumes receptionist and office management duties, and performs other duties as assigned.

This position will work in collaboration with a dynamic International Business Development team of professionals responsible for promoting, advancing, and strengthening Canadian trade and investment opportunities with the US. and other sections at the Canadian Consulate General where appropriate.

Language requirement:
Fluency in English (oral and written).

Essential qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate clearly in their letter how they meet the Education, Experience and Computer Skills qualifications listed below: Please be specific and provide examples for each of the qualifications:
• Degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the duties and specific areas of competence required by the position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Minimum two (2) years recent experience in office environment including providing administrative support to a high performing team;
• Event planning and execution;
• Experience in financial administration including budgets and the preparation of reports;
• Experience preparing well written and accurate reports targeted to advocacy objectives;
• Experience responding to public inquiries verbally or in writing, as well as conducting research and writing reports related to these inquiries;
• Experience in the use of Word, Excel, and Outlook, research databases and contacts/client management systems; and
• Proven capability to perform Internet research.

Asset Qualifications:
• Experience in the professional use of a company’s social media, including LinkedIn and Twitter.
• Experience in graphic design.
• Knowledge of French is an asset.

Organizational Needs:
Candidates who meet the Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may be a written test, an interview, an in‐basket exercise, a skills test, or any combination of these methods.
• Basic knowledge of the role of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service;
• Knowledge of international business and marketing; and
• Knowledge of function and operation of at least one database.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
• Ability to use social media tools for promotion and/or to generate new business opportunities; and
• Ability to take initiative to identity and solve problems.

Operational Requirements:
• Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 37.5 hours per week.
• Must be available to attend events in the evening on a regular basis and work overtime on occasion, when requested.
• Must be willing to travel within NY, NJ, CT, PA and DE and, on occasion, to Canada.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• The successful candidate will be required to obtain Government of Canada Reliability Status (RS) security verification.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with the dynamic results-oriented Canadian Trade Commissioner Service Team at the Canadian Consulate General in New York to foster more cross border trade, innovation and investment in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector. We are seeking a Business Development Assistant to provide program and administrative support to the International Business Development Section. The successful candidate will need to be a bright, articulate, hard-working individual with good interpersonal skills.
