Summary of position:
The Public Affairs Graphic Designer supports the delivery of advocacy strategies by designing digital and hardcopy products (e-banners, presentations, banners, pop-ups, brochures, logos, event invitations) used in advocacy campaigns; responds to requests for design related advice from staff in the Embassy; provides research and communications support to the Public Affairs section; supports curating of the gallery; makes short animated videos; manages programs linked to the lobby’s screens; contacts vendors; and performs other duties as necessary.

Essential qualifications:
Language requirement:
English (The ability to work in French would be an asset.)


Degree or diploma in graphic design or visual arts from an accredited university or college OR an acceptable combination of education, ongoing training, and significant work experience related to the duties and specific areas of competence required by the position.


•2 years of overall professional experience in the graphic design, marketing or communication fields

Asset Qualifications:
•Knowledge of major Canada/United States’ bilateral issues
•Copywriting ability
•Ability to work in French

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
Candidates who meet the Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may be a written test, an interview, an in-basket exercise, a skills test, or any combination of these methods.

•Mastery of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat
•Experience with other applications, such as Dreamweaver, After Effects, Word and PowerPoint, Prezi and Pictochart
•Typography editing.

•Critical thinking skills to solve visual design challenges
•Strong written and verbal communication capability
•Ability to juggle multiple tasks without heavy guidance and deliver on-deadline
•High attention to detail
•Ability to work as part of a team

•Sound judgement;
•Tact and diplomacy; and
•Flexibility and adaptability.

Condition(s) of Employment:
Condition of employment (must be met):
1. Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
2. Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions.

Area of selection:
• Persons living in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. • Employees of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. • Employees of any Canadian Mission in the United States. Relocation will not be paid in any circumstance. • Spouses and dependents of Canada-based staff at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.

Hours of work:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Locally Engaged Staff (LES) in the United States of 37.5 hours per week. The incumbent will be required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends on an as-needed basis. The incumbent may be required to work hours in excess of 37.5 hours some weeks.
