Summary of position:
Type of Advertisement
Term Appointment of 24 months with possibility of extension on a term and/or an indeterminate basis.

The aim of this competition is to fill one full-time level 9 position.

Also, a pool of qualified candidates may be established from this selection process to fill other positions and/or temporary assignments within the Embassy in Rome and the Business Development Section in Milan of the Embassy’s Trade Program. These positions may be at the same or at a lower level. The pool would be valid for up to one year.

JOB SUMMARY

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) provides strategic market information and market access solutions for Canadian companies looking to export, invest abroad, or develop innovation partnerships using our extensive network abroad and across Canada. It also assists foreign companies planning to invest in Canada or current investors to expand their operations in Canada. This position contributes to the delivery of Canada's International Business Development program in Italy.

Under the direction of the Embassy of Canada in Rome, the International Business Development Officer:
• proactively seeks to establish and expand networks required to identify and promote opportunities in assigned sectors for attracting investment to Canada from major industrial regions and clusters, with particular focus on Northern Italy;
• reviews, analyses and synthesizes information developed at HQ and from other sources in Canada on strategic priority sectors/industries and on Canada’s business climate;
• cultivates sources, develops a sense of the potential of a local company for international expansion, and identifies a company’s philosophy for expansion;
• defines associated parameters for investment decisions (such as corporate drivers, the nature and size of the investment);
• identify credible leads and insure appropriate follow up;
• gathers market intelligence and information in proactive sectors across Northern Italy with a view to informing the Embassy’s overall trade strategy (across the investment, trade and science and technology functions);
• assists in the coordination of the International Business Development's Investment Outcall program;
• engages with contacts in the Northern Italy business community, expanding the mission's profile and reach and generating integrative trade leads.

Essential qualifications:
SCREENING CRITERIA
Applicants must clearly demonstrate on their application that they meet all the following essential criteria and are within the area of selection. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of application.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A. Bachelor’s degree in either commerce, marketing, business administration, international trade, international relations
PLUS
a minimum of five (5) years recent* experience in a private sector company or government, relevant to the position (sales/marketing departments, trade/investment fields), e.g.
- advising and facilitating information services to clients in the area of business and market development, investment promotion and/or trade policy;
- providing briefings and preparing material for and delivering presentations; preparing reports, responding to client enquiries, conducting research
- working with business clients and maintaining a network of contacts (clients, partners and stakeholders);
- event planning and project management

*Recent meaning within the last eight (8) years

OR

B) Master's Degree in either commerce, marketing, business administration, international trade, international relations
PLUS
a minimum of three (3) years recent* experience in a private sector company or government, relevant to the position (sales/marketing departments, trade/investment fields), e.g.
- advising and facilitating information services to clients in the area of business and market development, investment promotion and/or trade policy;
- providing briefings and preparing material for and delivering presentations; preparing reports, responding to client enquiries, conducting research

LANGUAGE
Fluency in English, French and Italian, both written and spoken.

RATED REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must meet the following rated requirements, which will be assessed through any of the following: written test, oral communication, role play, interviews and reference checks.

KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of International business development practices, including investment, exporting, technology transfer, international trade research, legal aspects of international trade, global supply chain management, competitive intelligence gathering, greenfield investments and general project management principles;
- Knowledge of Italian political and business environment, business climate, government structure;
- Proficiency with computers, office software (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other hardware.

Asset Qualifications:
The Embassy of Canada has the right to further screen on Asset Qualifications and as such, preference may be preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. Candidates should also clearly demonstrate in their cover letter if they meet these qualifications:

- Master’s degree in either commerce, marketing, business administration, international trade;
- Knowledge of at least one key Italian industrial or commercial sector (such as financial services, manufacturing, transport, ICT, agri-food, etc.);
- Knowledge of Canadian political and business environment;
- Previous experience working as a Trade Commissioner or a Trade Officer in a Foreign Office
- Experience having assisted a private sector company make a foreign greenfield investment.

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
- Availability to travel in Italy, Europe and Canada as required;
- Availability to work overtime on short notice;
- Availability to attend training for a period to be determined in Rome during the first months of work.

Condition(s) of Employment:
AREA OF SELECTION
This position is open to individuals who are eligible to work in Italy and reside at the moment of application in one of the EU countries part of the free mobility agreement, who meet all of the essential requirements stated below, and whose applications are received by the closing date only through this recruitment portal.

The Embassy does not reimburse any travel costs to and from assessments nor does it reimburse any relocation costs.

The Embassy of Canada does not sponsor work permit applications on behalf of candidates.

RELIABILITY AND SECURITY
The position requires a valid Reliability Status granted by the Canadian Government. Incumbent must be able to secure and maintain a Reliability Status for the duration of the employment.

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The employee will be required to work in a satellite or teleworking arrangement in Milan.
