Summary of position:
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service is a world-wide network of professionals dedicated to advancing Canada's global commerce. These professionals work with government and business to monitor trends, identify opportunities, and overcome obstacles to enhance bilateral trade, investment, and innovation happen.

As a member of the Trade Commissioner Service, you will contribute to advancing Canada’s science, technology, and innovation (STI) leadership by, among others:
- Developing and sharing knowledge of China’s STI governance, policies, important players, and opportunities for Canada
- Providing service, advice and information to stakeholders such as Canadian officials, research institutions, companies, and other trade commissioners
- Building relationships with clients and local contacts
- Planning and executing events
- Planning and managing budgets

Essential qualifications:
Education:
• Minimum Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience

Language:
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Minimum two years’ recent experience in international commerce or minimum two years’ recent experience related to international science, technology, and innovation
• Experience in working and liaising with government departments and officials
• Significant experience providing client service to internal and external clients (in companies or other government departments)

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of international business (exporting, importing, investment, technology transfer, etc.) or knowledge of science, technology, and innovation policy and international collaboration
• Knowledge of MS Office Tools, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to write effective business correspondence in English and Chinese
• Ability to research, interpret sources of information and synthesize data to respond to requests for information from stakeholders
• Ability to perform translation and interpretation from English to Chinese and vice versa

Language:
• Proficiency in French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Experience in working with visiting business and/or government delegations
• Experience researching and drafting written material on topics pertaining to technology and innovation policy

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of relevant topics such as Canadian and Chinese science, technology, and innovation policies and programs; trade and investment business environment and practices; major areas and/or sectors of international trade; Chinese government and industry structures; and/or major economic and political issues

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to create high-impact visual material in the form of infographics, one-pagers, and presentations

Organizational Needs:
N/A

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required
• Able to travel domestically and internationally as required

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance

Area of selection:
This position is open to external applicants residing in China and employees occupying an indeterminate or term position in China Missions who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Beijing at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Beijing at own expense.
