High Commission of Canada to Barbados

Summary of position:
Under the direction of the Deputy Management Consular Officer, provides consular assistance and emergency services for Canadians in the areas of accreditation of the High Commission of Canada to Barbados & the OECS outside of Barbados; supports mission communication activities; provides passport, citizenship and notarial services; develops and maintains productive relationships with host authorities and organizations and other diplomatic missions in the areas of accreditation outside of Barbados; supervises Honorary Consuls within the Mission Consular District; and performs other duties as required.

Essential qualifications:
 Fluency in English and French, both written and spoken (equivalent to Government of Canada Level “C” – see link for description:

 Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
 An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or work experience related to the duties and specific areas of competence required for the position.

 Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the past ten (10) years providing service to a wide range of clients which may include work in areas such as:
a) social and family services, or dealing directly with families and children
b) legal, health, or outreach services with a focus on problem solving or issues management.
 Experience dealing with sensitive client information

 Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledge of web-based search engine and social media platforms.

Asset Qualifications:
 Experience providing case management services to clients, which may include work in such areas as consular services, or passport/citizenship services.
 Experience with and/or knowledge of key local government agencies and interlocutors relevant to the provision of consular services to Canadians
 Experience working in a diplomatic/consular mission and/or an international organization.
 Experience with emergency management planning and/or response.

 Successful completion of the Passport Canada training course.

 Knowledge of government organizations in the Eastern Caribbean that may assist Canadian citizens with routine matters, during times of distress, or during a crisis or emergency situation.

Condition(s) of Employment:
 Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal record check, credit check, and validation of qualifications
 Be able and committed to working additional hours as required and on short notice including evenings and weekends
 Must be willing to undertake work-related travel
 Field work under potentially difficult conditions will be required (e.g., prison visits)
 Passing grade on Passport Canada Foreign Operations Online Training (obtained within three months of starting date)
 Delegated Signing Authority under the Canada Evidence Act (obtained within three months of starting date)
 Successful completion of a one-year probationary period

Area of selection:
Open to Barbadian nationals, CARICOM nationals eligible for a work permit, and expatriates with a valid work permit.
