Summary of position:
Under the general direction of the Executive Assistant to the Head of Mission, the incumbent is responsible for preparing and overseeing culinary aspects of Canada’s mission in Beijing. This includes identifying appropriate Canadian and local cuisine and preparing such cuisine for official and unofficial hospitality events (including formal and informal luncheons, dinners, cocktails and receptions).

The incumbent is also responsible for the daily running and management of the Chancery/Official Residence, managing staff (either temporary or permanent), and managing the OR food inventories and supplies.

Essential qualifications:
Education:
 Diploma from a certified culinary institute OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience

Language:
• Proficiency in English or French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Recent* experience in the following areas:
 Working in the field of high caliber food creation and productions; demonstrating high-level culinary skills in the delivery of wide range gourmet meals, with an emphasis on Canadian cuisine;
 Working in a reputed/recognized hotel, restaurant, or commercial kitchen;
 Providing catering to events for up to 200 people;
 Supervising catering and serving staff;
 Food purchasing and control of provisions and inventories;
 Budget planning and tracking;
 Kitchen Management and Administration (i.e. managing kitchen invoices, receipts, inventories, time management etc.)

* Minimum of one year within the past five years.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of culinary preparation, artistic design and trends, cooking method and presentation techniques according to the highest culinary and food safety standards, including allergies and food restrictions;
• Knowledge of pastry presentation;
• Knowledge of wine pairing;
• Knowledge of health and safety practices.

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to create exceptional meals, including adapting recipes, developing menus and cooking unique dishes based on a theme;
• Ability to collaborate in several aspects of kitchen operations, for example: receiving and verifying quality of goods, tracking and rotating inventory, loading and unloading goods;
• Ability to respond promptly and effectively to all requests to deliver and adapt high caliber culinary services, within short deadlines;
• Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships within team and supervisory relationships;
• Ability to perform effectively under pressure.

Asset Qualifications:
Language:
• Proficiency in both English and French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Experience working as Chef in a reputed/recognized hotel, restaurant, or commercial kitchen;
• Experience and familiarity in preparing Chinese cuisine.

Organizational Needs:
N/A

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required;
• Able to travel as required;
• Willingness to participate in required training including, but not limited to, Mandarin language courses and other corporate training courses.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens;
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance.

Area of selection:
This position is open to applicants who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews at the designated location at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Beijing at own expense.
