Salary:
Starting Annual Gross Salary: RMB 179,844 (approximately 34,000 CAD); salary is before tax and employee social insurance contributions; 13th month bonus and employer social insurance contributions are paid on top of the gross salary; overtime (if required) will be paid at the applicable rate in additional to the salary; salary is non-negotiable.

Summary of position:
Are you an experienced Chef looking for a culinary adventure? Are you tired of working split shifts in a hot and busy kitchen? Have you thought about how you would like to run a kitchen where you have the creative freedom to showcase Canadian agricultural products? The Embassy of Canada is looking for you!

We are looking for someone who can take the initiative to use food and service to represent Canada and the Embassy of Canada in China. This person must be up to the rewarding challenge of promoting Canada within the context of Chinese culture and bring creativity and innovation to his/her work.

Supported by the Office of the Ambassador, the Executive Chef is required to manage all official hospitality functions hosted by the Ambassador, including 2 to 24-person seated meals, buffets and receptions for up to 150 people. The Chef also plans well-balanced meals and writes menus that represent Canada and Canadian agricultural products. The events have to be prepared and executed with a high level of culinary expertise to high profile guests. Additionally, the Chef must be able to adapt quickly to changes as in any kitchen environment. The Chef may be included to take part in promotional events and trade shows.

The role has a high degree of autonomy and requires someone who can also manage 3 support staff.

Essential qualifications:
Education:
• Diploma from a certified culinary institute OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience

Language:
• Proficiency in English or French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Recent experience in the following areas:
- Working in the field of high caliber food creation and productions; demonstrating high-level culinary skills in the delivery of wide range gourmet meals, with an emphasis on Canadian cuisine;
- Providing catering to events;
- Food purchasing and control of provisions and inventories;
- Budget planning and tracking;
- Kitchen Management and Administration (i.e. managing kitchen invoices, receipts, inventories, time management etc.)

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of culinary preparation, artistic design and trends, cooking method and presentation techniques according to the highest culinary and food safety standards, including allergies and food restrictions;
• Knowledge of pastry presentation;
• Knowledge of wine pairing;
• Knowledge of health and safety practices.

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to create exceptional meals, including adapting recipes, developing menus and cooking unique dishes based on a theme;
• Ability to collaborate in several aspects of kitchen operations, for example: receiving and verifying quality of goods, tracking and rotating inventory, loading and unloading goods;
• Ability to respond promptly and effectively to all requests to deliver and adapt high caliber culinary services, within short deadlines;
• Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships within team and supervisory relationships;
• Ability to perform effectively under pressure.

Asset Qualifications:
Language:
• Proficiency in both English and French (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Experience working as Chef in a reputed/recognized hotel, restaurant, or commercial kitchen;
• Experience and familiarity in preparing Chinese cuisine.

Organizational Needs:
N/A

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required;
• Able to travel as required;
• Willingness to participate in required training including, but not limited to, Mandarin language courses and other corporate training courses.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens;
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance.

Area of selection:
This position is open to eligible applicants who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews at the designated location at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Beijing at own expense.
