Summary of position:
Under the direction of the Program Manager for Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Services, the successful candidate will:

a) Provide analysis, advice and reports on political, economic and foreign policy matters;
b) Promote Canadian foreign policy priorities, values and interests;
c) Create, maintain and enhance a strong network of contacts including key individuals, institutions, and organizations instrumental to achieving Embassy objectives;
d) Develop and implement public diplomacy initiatives including the proactive management of the Embassy’s social media presence;
e) Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of projects in receipt of funding from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives; and,
f) Perform other duties as required.


Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a related field e.g. political science, economics, international relations, history, etc.

Language:
• Advanced oral and written fluency in English
• Advanced oral and written fluency in Shona and/or Ndebele.

Experience:
• Minimum 18-months recent experience in analysis and report-writing in English on political issues or on a related area (international relations, legal affairs, economics, journalism, etc.).
• Demonstrable recent* experience in administering corporate social media accounts (“administering” means: identifying opportunities for social media activities; composing; testing; adapting to other languages; posting social media messages, or interacting with the public via the various platforms).
• Demonstrable recent* experience with the organisation of public diplomacy events and strategies.
* “Recent” is defined as having been acquired within the past 5 years.

Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.
• Demonstrable knowledge of the political and economic environments in Botswana and/or Angola;
• Working-level knowledge of French and/or Portuguese;
• Relevant and significant (minimum of 1 year) recent* experience working for an international organization or diplomatic mission;
• Relevant and significant (minimum of 1 year) recent* experience working on programming with civil society.
*Recent is defined as within the past 5 years

Operational Requirements:
• Occasional overtime will be required;
• Some travel (including internationally) will be required.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Candidates must have a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

• Obtain and maintain a reliability rating (security clearance) from the Government of Canada.
