Summary of position:
Export Development Canada (EDC) is Canada’s export credit agency, offering innovative commercial solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business. EDC’s knowledge and partnerships are used by more than 13,000 Canadian companies and their global customers in up to 200 markets worldwide each year. Approximately 80 per cent of EDC's customers are small and medium-sized businesses.

EDC is a Crown corporation, wholly owned by the Government of Canada, and is financially self-sustaining, and is a recognized leader in financial reporting and economic analysis. While headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, EDC has a world-wide presence. The Johannesburg representation is responsible for the coverage of 53 countries in the African continent.

Under the leadership and guidance of the Chief Representative, Middle East & Africa, the Senior Regional Manager is responsible for leading EDC’s business development efforts in Africa. The incumbent has continual interaction with both Chief Financial Officers/Treasurers of major local borrowers, senior bankers, CEO’s, senior private sector representatives and senior public sector officials to discuss market trends, new financing opportunities, potential financial structuring solutions, credit analysis and risk mitigation issues. The incumbent is expected to leverage this extensive value added network across the market of coverage in order to enhance EDC’s capacity to support key clients and Canadian exporters and investors active in the market. As a trusted advisor to senior EDC management in the field and at headquarters, the Senior Regional Manager is called upon to develop and implement strategies, approaches and initiatives for positioning the EDC brand in the markets of coverage. The incumbent will lead the development of innovative solutions to meet business requirements of the market of coverage.

The Senior Regional Manager is accountable for the overall business results of EDC in a territory against specified business targets including assigned strategic accounts. The Senior Regional Manager oversees the business development planning and the management of business development strategies and initiatives in the market of coverage.
The Senior Regional Manager is also responsible for building and managing the brand image and reputation of EDC as a local value added player in the market of coverage and manages the Corporation’s relationship with representatives of the Canadian government at missions within the area of coverage, in particular with the Trade Commissioners Service.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language.
Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

• MBA or master’s degree in business or finance from a recognized university
• Bachelor’s degree in business or finance from a recognized university and 10 years of experience in a senior role in the financial industry

• Fluency in English (oral and written) - professional/business standard.

• Minimum of 7 years of experience in a senior role in the financial industry
• Minimum of 5 year of relevant experience in at least two of the following areas:
o commercial / corporate / project finance
o lending origination and financial structuring
o credit assessment
o working within a multi-sectoral business network
o developing strategic relationships

• Strong cultural knowledge of the business environment in Africa

• Demonstrated ability to identify and deliver on new business opportunities

Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment
may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or
psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

• Knowledge of French
• Knowledge of the Canadian export and investment opportunities in Africa
• Strong knowledge of the leading industries in Africa as well as an understanding of the Canadian capabilities within those sectors
• Strong ECA (Export Credit Agency) and EDC (Export Development Canada) product knowledge

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Overtime may be required occasionally
• Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday at time to be arranged by the supervisor
• Ability to travel within Africa and to Canada as required
• Ability to travel to Ottawa, Canada for a 3-4 week onboarding training period will be required
• May be exposed to stressful situations, unhealthy or difficult working environments

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Able to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status Clearance. Please note that the Reliability Status Clearance must be maintained throughout your employment at the High Commission as failure to do so may result in dismissal. This includes a criminal and credit background check.
• Copies of educational qualifications will be required at the interview stage of the process
• Must be able to obtain and retain a valid travel document and be willing, able and legally admissible to travel internationally including within Africa and to Canada.
• South African citizenship, holder of a valid South Africa residence permit or otherwise legally able to work at the High Commission (please note The High Commission of Canada does not sponsor work authorizations directly or indirectly).
• Ability to meet the medical requirements as defined by the employer. Successful candidate(s) may be required to undergo a medical evaluation.
