Summary of position:
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service is a world-wide network of professionals dedicated to advancing Canada's global commerce. These professionals work with government and business to identify opportunities as well as obstacles to trade so that they can act on them to allow trade to happen.

As a member of the Trade Commissioner Service, the International Business Development Officer will contribute to advancing Canada’s global commerce by, among others, developing and sharing knowledge of the marketplace; providing service, advice and information to clients; building relationships with clients and local contacts; doing troubleshooting as well as planning and executing events.

** This competition may be used to staff LE-07 positions on three different teams within the Embassy of Canada’s Trade Section: one in the Agriculture team, one in the Trade Policy Team, and one in the Clients, Capital, Research and Innovation Team. An LE-07 position is a junior officer-level position, and works alongside both locally-engaged senior officers and assistants, as well as Canada-based diplomatic staff. While the three positions all share common essential qualifications, each position has specific Asset Criteria described below. For detailed instructions, please see “How to Apply,” below.**

The results of this competition may also be used to create an eligibility list to staff similar openings of either indeterminate or term duration which may arise at the Embassy.

Essential qualifications:

Education:
• Degree from a recognized university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience

Language:
• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Experience:
• Minimum 2 years of recent experience (in the past 5 years) in all of the following areas:
o Experience in international commerce
o Experience providing client service to internal and external clients (in companies or other government departments)
o Experience in working and liaising with government departments and officials

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of international business for example exporting, importing, investment, or e-commerce
• Knowledge of Canadian and Chinese trade and business environment and practices; major areas and/or sectors of international trade; Chinese government and industry structures, and current economic and political issues
• Knowledge of MS Office Tools, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Abilities/skills:
• Ability to write reports, articles and effective business correspondence in English and Chinese
• Ability to research, interpret diverse sources of information, analyze and synthesize data to respond to requests for information from clients
• Ability to perform translation from English to Chinese and vice versa

o Experience working in the agriculture and/or agri-food sector

Digital Branding, Corporate Communications and Training Officer
o Experience doing work pertaining to branding and marketing or digital online branding and marketing.

Knowledge:

Agriculture International Business Development Officer:
o Knowledge of Canadian and Chinese agriculture and agri-food sectors

Trade Policy and International Business Development Officer
o Knowledge of current trends in Chinese trade policy and implications for international business

Digital Branding, Corporate Communications and Training Officer
o Knowledge of the Chinese and Canadian digital market environments (e-commerce, social media, digital marketing strategies, digital branding, etc)

Organizational Needs:
N/A

Operational Requirements:
• Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required
• Able to travel domestically and internationally as required

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance

Area of selection:
These positions are open to external applicants residing in China and employees occupying an indeterminate or term position in China Missions who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date. Short-listed candidates must be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Beijing at own expense. The successful candidates will be required to relocate to Beijing at own expense.

It is possible to apply for one, two, or all three of the positions. Please note that the Asset Criteria for each position will be evaluated separately, including at the written test and/or interview stages.
