Summary of position:
Under the supervision of the Structural Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent performs general labor and carpentry/masonry/landscaping tasks at the Chancery and official residences. Other specialized jobs include painting, dry wall repairs, and other building repairs. As well, the incumbent assists with the movement and assembly of furniture and equipment, including driving a half-ton truck.

Essential qualifications:
Language:
English

Education:
Successful completion of secondary school or equivalent.
Experience:
•Experience in general construction, including the use of hand and power tools;
•Experience in general labour tasks, repairing drywall, moving/assembling furniture, clearing debris (snow and ice, etc.) and/or and
•Experience driving a work truck

Asset Qualifications:
The ability to work in French.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of making simple measurements;
• Knowledge of moving furniture & equipment; and
• Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices.
Abilities:
• Communicate effectively orally in English,
• Carry out routine construction repairs, including such tasks as drywall repair, carpentry, masonry and painting;
• Operate basic hand tools;
• Operate power tools, such as circular saws, reciprocating saws, drills, etc.;
• Ability to safely lift 50 pounds;
• Ability to drive a half-ton truck in Washington, D.C. traffic; and
• Take direction from a supervisor.

Condition(s) of Employment:
Condition of employment (must be met):
•.Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
•.Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with U.S. protocol directives for foreign missions. (US Citizen, LPR, or A-1 visa as required by the Department of State for employment in a foreign mission)
•Good physical condition: capable of regularly lifting 50 pounds and using extension ladders and lifts.
•A valid driver’s license with a clean record and the ability to drive a half ton truck; and
•Work overtime on short notice and be available for occasional duties outside of normal working hours, i.e., evenings and weekends as this position is part of the Emergency Response Team.

• Persons living in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. • Employees of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. • Employees of any Canadian Mission in the United States. Relocation will not be paid in any circumstance. • Spouses and dependents of Canada-based staff (CBS) at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.

Hours of work:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Locally Engaged Staff (LES) in the United States of 40 hours per week. The incumbent must be able to work overtime on short notice and be available for occasional duties outside of normal working hours, i.e., evenings and weekends as this position is part of the Emergency Response Team.
