Summary of position:
The High Commission of Canada to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Mauritius/Embassy of Canada to Madagascar, based in Pretoria, South Africa, is seeking candidates for the position of Honorary Consul in Mauritius.

The functions performed may include:
• Consular assistance and advocacy for Canadians
• Development of commercial and economic relations
• On occasion as required, providing political/economic analysis
• Passport, citizenship, and notarial services
• Support for the supervising mission in maintaining bilateral relations
• A local contact point for the supervising mission
• Administrative and logistical support for official visits
• Representation at diplomatic, ceremonial, and public affairs events

Essential qualifications:
The Government of Canada will consider bilingual proficiency and diversity in assessing candidates for this position. Education and Experience
• A degree from a recognized university, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job related training and/or experience
• Experience in decision-making with respect to sensitive and complex issues
• Experience dealing with different levels of government

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Capacity to maintain good relations with local government authorities
• Capacity to have rapid access to local government authorities
• In-depth understanding of political, economic and social dynamics in Mauritius
• Well-connected and having a good standing in/with the local community
• Ability to be service oriented in order to meet service standards

Personal Suitability
• High ethical standards and integrity
• Sound judgment
• Superior interpersonal skills

Asset Qualifications:
• Independent means and availability of a suitable location (e.g. office) where consular clients can access service during regular business hours (e.g. Monday to Friday)
• Proficiency in both Canadian official languages (English and French)
• Demonstrate a tangible connection to Canada:
o are Canadian citizens, and/or
o are employed by a Canadian company and/or
o were educated in Canada and/or
o have family ties with Canada and/or
o demonstrate some professional affiliation with Canada (e.g. commercial ties)

• Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check.

Area of selection:
The Government of Canada has adopted a new, open, transparent and merit-based Honorary Consul selection process that strives to increase overall gender parity and diversity in the network of Canadian honorary consuls. Pursuant to this approach, all Honorary Consul appointments must be advertised publicly. Applications from all eligible candidates, including the incumbent, are encouraged and will be considered on an equal footing.

Important Notes:
The selection process will consist of a review of all applications to ensure that applicants meet the essential requirements. Please note that failure to meet any of the Essential Requirements eliminates candidates from further consideration. Only those applicants who meet these may be contacted by the selection committee for an interview or other form of assessment of the Rated Requirements.
The assessment may include an interview, reference checks and other tests that will consist of a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant's knowledge, abilities, and personal suitability for the position.
