General Maintenance Technician

Salary:
€32,401.30 base salary exc. 13th month plus annual increments for 10 years with satisfactory performance. Full time 37.5 hours of work per week.

One-year term contract, which may be extended for a second one-year term contract possibly leading to indeterminate. Contractual conditions may have to be modified in accordance with changes to new Dutch labour law effective January 1st, 2020. This position is a locally engaged staff position subject to the Terms and Conditions of Employment for LES in the Netherlands

Summary of position:
Under the direction of the Common Services Officer (Property & Material), the Maintenance Technician is responsible for the completion of general repairs in one or more of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting and specific functional maintenance (such as refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, boiler operations, auto/vehicle mechanics, audio-visual). Also responsible for duties and schedules for the whole Embassy and/or crown owned or leased assets and equipment.

The incumbent must also assist with preparing preventive maintenance programs as required, and assist other Maintenance Team members in the completion of various projects outside their area of expertise. The incumbent is also required to inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with manufacturer’s specifications, and consult their supervisor when required.

Essential qualifications:
Essential qualifications

Education:
• Technical and/or professional diploma, or combination of relevant experience (5 years at least) in the following fields: general construction, building maintenance, plumbing, electricity and/or carpentry.

Language:
• Fluent English (oral and written)
• Fluent Dutch (oral and written)

Experience:
• Minimum of three (3) years of recent* experience working as general maintenance technician in three (3) or more of the following fields:
o Experience with general maintenance, small repairs and minor maintenance work in office, commercial or residential buildings (for instance, carpentry, painting, assembling furniture, troubleshooting, etc.)
o Experience with inspecting office, commercial or residential buildings to identify and/or resolve general maintenance issues, mechanical failure or breakdowns;
o Experience with plumbing and/or electrical systems and/or heating units and/or carpentry;
o Experience with client services related to general maintenance services in office, commercial or residential buildings;
o Experience with general administration related to maintenance, including basic scope of work, coordination, cost estimates, receipts, vouchers and contracts, inventories, scheduled maintenance.

*Recent is defined as the last five (5) years

Rated Requirements

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.
• Experience working in a general maintenance technician position at a diplomatic mission, government agency or private company
• Experience working in an office environment
• Relevant certification in plumbing and/or electricity and/or carpentry
• Experience and knowledge of auto/vehicle mechanic
• Knowledge of the Canadian building code
• Working level of French oral and in writing
If candidates meet the factors listed in the asset qualifications they must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their covering letter.

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Required to be in good health, as well as capable of handling heavy materials and furniture
• Required to have a valid driver’s license and to use a utility vehicle provided by the Embassy
• Full-time position, with no possibility of teleworking arrangements or flexible working schedule unless otherwise communicated by the employer. Normal working week 37.5 hours (7.5 hours per day) from Monday to Friday
• Required to work overtime occasionally and on short notice, depending on operational needs
• Work is to be performed on different sites where crown-owned or crown-leased properties are located.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory references, as well as the ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security screening (including a criminal record and credit check).
• Proof of right to work in the Netherlands
• Declaration of fitness for work via medical exam (arranged and paid by the Embassy)
• ** Duties may require the incumbent to move heavy items on a regular basis and/or lift up to 25 kgs
