Summary of position:
Under the direction of the Regional Senior Trade Commissioner and reporting to the Ambassador of Canada to Zimbabwe, the Trade Commissioner:
• Develops and maintains knowledge of the political and economic context of the market place in Botswana and Zimbabwe, taking into consideration the general enabling environment, general regulatory environment, specific requirements, local buying and import patterns and trends, and evaluations of current and future economic conditions.
• Acts as the focal point for communication with clients, including responding to requests, providing: strategic advice on doing business in the local markets; market intelligence and value-added advice on opportunities and challenges; advice on upcoming events; suggested next steps to take full advantage of local opportunities; and reputable local contacts.
• Establishes effective working relations with local contacts, to advise on Canada’s export and innovation capabilities, promote Canadian products/services, and promote Canadian-local innovation partnerships.
• Researches and synthesizes information from diverse sources on business-related issues and key projects, including for proactive reporting purposes.

Education:
• Master-level degree from a recognized university in a related field (e.g. business administration, commerce, economics, international business, international relations, etc.) OR an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience (without a completed Master’s degree, five years of experience is required)

Languages:
• Fluency in English (oral & written).

Experience:
• Minimum 3 years recent* experience in managing client and stakeholder relationships
• Minimum 3 years recent* experience in providing client service support to customers/clients
• Recent experience* using standard office software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Open Office, etc.) in a business or professional environment
• Recent experience* using Internet search engines and social media tools

*Recent is defined as within the past five years.

Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of the business, political, and economic environment in Zimbabwe.
• Knowledge of key stakeholders involved in Zimbabwe’s commercial and economic situation (including non-governmental organizations, government institutions, international organizations, domestic/international companies, and investors).
• Knowledge of international business practices.

• Ability to analyze and evaluate files/situations, exercise good judgment and make sound recommendations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional interpersonal relationships with clients, colleagues, and managers.
• Ability to manage own time, set priorities and meet deadlines.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

• Working-level knowledge of French
• Working-level knowledge of Shona and/or Ndebele
• Working-level knowledge of Portuguese
• Relevant and significant (minimum of 1 year) experience working for an international or diplomatic organization
• Knowledge of the business, political, and economic environment in Angola and Botswana

Operational Requirements:
• May be required to work overtime (evenings/weekends) as required, and sometimes with short notice;
• Must be willing and able to travel nationally and internationally.


Condition(s) of Employment:
• Holds a valid residency or work permit for Zimbabwe.
• Ability to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Enhanced Reliability security screening.
