This position is an LES (Locally Engaged Staff) position, subject to the Term and Conditions of Employment for LES at the Embassy of Canada to the Netherlands. Initial fixed-term contract of 12 months with possibility to extend or become indeterminate.

Summary of position:
Under the direction of the Deputy Management and Consular Officer (DMCO), the General Maintenance Technician is responsible for the completion of general repairs in one or more of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting and specific functional maintenance (such as refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, boiler operations, auto/vehicle mechanics, audio-visual). Also responsible for duties and schedules for the whole Embassy and/or crown owned or leased assets and equipment.

The incumbent must also assist with preparing preventive maintenance programs as required, and assist other Maintenance Team members in the completion of various projects outside their area of expertise. The incumbent is also required to inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with manufacturer’s specifications, and consult their supervisor when required.

Essential qualifications:
Essential qualifications
Candidates will initially be screened against the essential qualifications relating to education, experience and language. It is insufficient to state that one simply meets the listed qualifications. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

• Technical and/or professional diploma, or combination of relevant experience (3 years at least) in the following fields: general construction, building maintenance, plumbing, electricity and/or carpentry.

• Fluent English (oral and written)
• Fluent Dutch (oral and written)

• Minimum of three (3) years of recent* experience working as general maintenance technician in the following fields:
 Experience with general maintenance, small repairs and minor maintenance work in office, commercial or residential buildings (for instance, carpentry, painting, assembling furniture, troubleshooting, etc.)
 Experience with inspecting office, commercial or residential buildings to identify and/or resolve general maintenance issues, mechanical failure or breakdowns;
 Experience with client services related to general maintenance services in office, commercial or residential buildings.

*Recent is defined as the last five (5) years

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.
• Professional certification related to building maintenance (plumbing, electricity or carpentry, etc.)
• Experience with general administration related to maintenance in an office environment
• Experience working in a general maintenance technician position at a diplomatic mission, government agency or private company

Organizational Needs:
• The selected candidate must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for the use of a utility vehicle provided by the Embassy.
• The work is to be performed on different sites where crown-owned or crown-leased properties are located.
• The selected candidate must be available to work full-time with no possibility of teleworking arrangements or flexible working schedule unless otherwise communicated by the employer. The normal working week is 37.5 hours (7.5 hours per day) from Monday to Friday.
• The selected candidate must be willing to work overtime occasionally and on short notice.

Operational Requirements:

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Right to work in the Netherlands at the time of submitting application.
• Able to provide a declaration of fitness for work via medical exam (arranged and paid by the Embassy) as position may require the incumbent to move heavy items on a regular basis and/or lift up to 25 kg.
• Able to obtain and retain an enhanced reliability security clearance. The following documents may be required as part of the security screening process for the successful candidate:
 VOG certificate
 Credit check
 Valid passport
 Certificate of Canadian Citizenship (if applicable)
 A recent passport photo (less than a year)
 Certificate(s) of employment and/or letter(s) of reference and references
 Legalized school certificates and/or diplomas (for non-Canadian diplomas)
