Summary of position:
Under the supervision of the Property and Material Manager, performs general repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting at the Chancery, Official Residences and Staff Quarters as well as oversee and support specialized maintenance on heating, air conditioning, appliance and other building repairs. The incumbent assists with the preparation and execution of preventative maintenance plans and inspects work performed by contractors. The individual must care for and maintain Mission assets including cargo van, tools and other material. Frequent travel around Manhattan is required.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate clearly how they meet the Language, Education and Experience requirements listed below:

Language Requirement:
Fluency in English (oral and written).
Education:
Successful completion of secondary school or equivalent. Trade certification from an accredited trade school preferred.
Experience:
• Minimum 5 years’ recent hands-on progressive experience in repairing, troubleshooting, remodeling residential homes and maintenance in one or more of the followings areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry/painting, and installing equipment/household appliances;
• Minimum 4 years recent experience in supervision/inspection of work performed by contractors;
• Minimum 2 years recent experience drafting scope of work for repairs;
• Recent experience in use of hand and power tools involved in carpentry and masonry repairs/construction; and
• Recent experience purchasing and maintaining tools, supplies and material.

*Recent as defined in the last 8 years.
Rated requirements:
Candidates who meet the Language, Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may be a written test, an interview, an in-basket exercise, a skills test, or any combination of these methods.
Knowledge:
• Knowledge of general mechanical, plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs and preventative maintenance;
• Knowledge of general hand power tool operation;
• Knowledge of general HVAC functions;
• Knowledge of household appliance installation and maintenance; and
• Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices.
Abilities:
• Ability to operate hand tools;
• Ability to lift 50 pounds;
• Ability to draft scopes of work for repairs;
• Ability to prepare and execute preventative maintenance plans;
• Ability to take direction from supervisor;
• Ability to work in a mix of team and independent projects;
• Ability to supervise/inspect work performed by contractors;
• Ability and willingness to move furniture & equipment; and
• Ability to carry out general repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting.

Operational Requirements:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 40 hours per week.

• Have independent work authorization in the U.S. and status in accordance with U.S. protocol directives for foreign missions. (I.e. US Citizen, U.S Legal Permanent Resident (LPR), or specific visa categories (e.g. dependents of Diplomatic and Official Visas holders)). Please note that the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations and Consulate of Canada in New York does not sponsor work authorizations directly or indirectly.
• Reside in the United States.
