Summary of position:
Reporting to the Counsellor (Commercial), and working within the Investment unit of the IBD Section of the Embassy, the Associate Investment Officer (AIO) role covers a number of key functions related to the promotion and attraction of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Canada. The AIO provides direct support to the Senior Investment Officers on FDI-related files by conducting research, responding to client inquiries, supporting and conducting investment prospecting, supporting FDI aftercare, assisting with FDI-related events, and conducting research for STCs who are doing FDI work. The AIO ensures that all information and data related to FDI is current, relevant, and accessible, both to support the IBD team and its investment objectives and to provide the Mission and Headquarters with data on IBD's FDI work. The AIO operates as an integral member of the IBD team, and supports the larger objectives of the group by assisting when required with IBD initiatives that fall outside of the FDI framework.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.


• Bachelor’s or equivalent degree from a recognized university in a field related to the position, including but not limited to: commerce, finance, statistical analysis and economics.


• Fluency in English and German, both written and spoken.


• A minimum of 2 years of recent and direct experience in business development;
• Experience in conducting statistical analysis using business data;
• Experience in providing strategic advice, briefings, and written reports to management and/or clients on international business issues; and
• Experience in using social media tools for promotion and/or to generate new business opportunities.

Rated Requirements

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

a. Knowledge:
• Knowledge of the role of governments in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI);
• Knowledge of research methods for analysing commercial information.
• Knowledge of the factors that influence investment, expansion and relocation decisions, and of Canada’s value proposition for investors; and
• Knowledge of trends and recent developments in the Canadian and German economies.

b. Abilities:
• Communicate effectively in English and in German, both orally and in writing;
• Use of technology and analytical tools and data bases.
• Analyze information and provide strategic advice;
• Plan, organize and carry out promotional events;
• Manage multiple priorities with tight deadlines;
• Use social media tools for promotion and/or to generate new business opportunities;

c. Competencies:
• Initiative;
• Achievement-orientation;
• Teamwork;
• Client-focus orientation.

Asset Qualifications:
• The ability to communicate effectively in French both orally and in writing
• Knowledge of markets in eastern Europe and of a language from this region

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Must be able to work overtime on short notice on occasion;
• Must be willing to travel; and
• Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends).

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Must have a valid German work authorization covering the employment period;
• Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status;

• Successful candidates will start with step 1 with 54.338 euros gross per annum, which is non negotiable.
