Summary of position:
Under the supervision of the Property Management Assistant, the maintenance technician provides general maintenance services and assists with repairs on crown owned or leased assets and equipment in one or more of the following areas: carpentry, masonry, painting, audio-visual, and various systems (includes heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical). It is expected that the maintenance technician delivers objects or small furniture items and moves, installs, builds and assembles furniture in crown/mission owned or leased assets.

The incumbents must provide written assessments and advice on scope, solutions, and costs estimates for projects or maintenance/repair work and recommends suppliers and contractors when required.

The incumbent must assist with lifecycle maintenance and repair planning for the refurbishments of the accommodations during the summer rotation period, including providing input on building conditions, local conditions and/or history of property or building; purchase pre-approved materials, prepares necessary reimbursement paperwork and submits all necessary receipts, vouchers; assist with maintenance focused staff quarters' inspections pre and post occupancy, including any outfitting that may be required.

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications. It is not sufficient to simply state responsibilities or list the criteria they meet.

Only those candidates who meet all the essential requirements and demonstrate this clearly within their application will then proceed to the next stage of the process.

• To hold at least a CESS (upper secondary education certificate) with technical orientation or an equivalent diploma and/or a professional training certification (heating technician, HVAC installer, repairer, cabinetmaker, kitchen designer and electrician installer).

• Fluency in French (oral and written), level B2 per the common European framework of reference for languages;
• Basic knowledge* of English (oral).

*Ability to give simple instructions in English to clients.

Applicants must have:
At least three (3) years of recent* experience in any of the following fields:
• Experience in general maintenance, small repairs and minor maintenance work in office, commercial or residential buildings (for example, carpentry, painting, furniture assembly, breakdown assistance, etc.);
• Experience in inspecting office, commercial or residential buildings to identify and/or solve general maintenance problems, breakdowns (mechanic, electric, plumbing, heating, cooling).

*Recent is defined as the over the last seven (7) years.

Rated Requirements

Applicants must also meet the rated requirements listed below related to knowledge, skills and competencies. These requirements will be assessed by assessment methods, which may include, but are not limited to written exams, interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessments.

• Knowledge of the layout of buildings and infrastructure;
• Knowledge of common hand and power tools;
• Knowledge of buildings maintenance;
• Knowledge in computer applications (Outlook / Word / Excel);
• Knowledge of health and safety measures;
• Knowledge of basic mathematics.

• Effective interactive communication in French - oral and written;
• Basic knowledge of English – oral;
• Ability to report orally and in writing the facts related to incidents (floods, damage, etc.);
• Ability to manage conflicting priorities, perform tasks under tight deadlines and prioritize work;
• Ability to develop a maintenance work plan and follow up on related tasks until the end of the work;

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the asset qualifications. Where applicable, applicants must clearly demonstrate how they meet the asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

• Experience in a maintenance technician position within a diplomatic mission, government agency or multinational company;
• Advanced knowledge in English, (level B1 or more of the common European framework of languages) and / or knowledge of Dutch, (level A2 or more of the common European framework of languages).

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• Ability to work overtime on short notice from time to time;
• Ability to perform occasional tasks outside of normal working hours (i.e. evenings and weekends);
• Full time position, working hours: 37.5 hours /week (Monday to Friday);
• Be able to do physical work such as moving furniture, appliances or lifting boxes;
• Obligation to have a valid driver's license and to use a utility vehicle provided by the Embassy;
• The work must be carried out on different sites where properties are located.

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Applicants must have a valid work authorisation and a driver's license covering the entire period of employment;
• When applying, candidates must provide a document proving their right of residence and to work in Belgium;
• Before an offer of employment can be made, candidates must provide a local address as proof of residence so that if selected, it will appear on the offer letter;
• Applicants who hold visas, type A electronic cards or non-renewable documents, such as student visas, cannot apply for this job, unless they are exempt from the obligation to obtain a job permit;
• A reliability rating (security clearance) is required to obtain this position at the Embassy of Canada and will be subject to audits. This rating must be maintained throughout the employment – loss of the latter is sufficient reason to dismiss the employee;
• Throughout their period of employment, candidates must continue to meet the operational need: to be able to do physical work such as moving furniture, appliances or lifting boxes;
• Candidates must fulfill the requirement of a medical examination (mandatory).
